Doesn't that bother you at all?
For a symbol to become official, it has to be declared through law or proclamation. Symbols like the national fruit, animal, dance, and costume are not even included in the list of the official national symbols. It has to be something like our National Flower, the Sampaguita. In 1934, during the Commonwealth era, Governor- General Frank Murphy declared sampaguita as national flower through Proclamation No. 652 (Read more...)

In school, we learned that Dr. Jose P. Rizal is considered to be our national hero but, will you believe that he also NOT considered to be an official national symbol? The Philippine National Symbols represent our country's traditions and ideals and convey the principles of sovereignty and national solidarity (Read more...) Does this mean Dr. Jose P. Rizal is not important? Of course, he is important! But other Filipinos like Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo would've been considered as national heroes as well because they fought bravely and most importantly, physically. Dr. Jose Rizal didn't do that! He just wrote a book about his experiences and then became hero.

10 Official National Symbols of the Philippines
1. National Sport- Arnis
Personally, I thought it was sipa or sepak takraw. It was what my teacher in my elementary taught me. It is also what is reflected on educational posters thats students often use for projects. Arnis is considered to be our national sport because former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared it on December of 2009, the Republic Act No. 9850(Read more..)

2. National Bird- Philippine Eagle
Because the bird is considered to be critically endangered, there has to be a law that would be able to protect it. The Philippine Eagle is something our country should boast about because of its size and rarity. Former president Fidel V. Ramos drafted the Proclamation No. 615 and was officially declared the national bird of the country in July 1995 (Read more...). For others, they consider "Maya" as the national bird because it is the most common bird seen elsewhere, even in the city.

5. National Flower- Sampaguita
Declared official along with the Narra tree in 1934 under the Executive Proclamation No. 652. It was said to have adopted because of the features of the flower especially its colour. The white petals of the flower represent the purity of the people of the Philippines.

FYI, Tagalog is just one of the many languages found in the Philippines. Filipino and Tagalog are not the same.

8. National Flag- Philippine Flag
Just like any country, our national flag should be respected. It is commonly raised on a pole high enough for people to see. The national anthem is played during the rising of the flag. Anything that resembles the flag should be handled with care. There are proper ways of handling, folding, and keeping the flag.
