Storya: What To Do During The Sinulog Season (2016)
The government of Cebu City has already released a list of activities for the most awaited Sinulog Festival. They also announced that private establishments are not to hold parties (unless they have a permit to do so) to control the crazy crowd and to preserve the solemnity of the feast of Senyor Santo Nino.
As for me, I'm not a party goer so I think this is just fitting since some people forget the meaning of the festival already. They get drunk, go wild, dirty and basically just go crazy. It's ok to have fun but I hope they learn how to control themselves too.
So for this year, I have listed things (For me) to do before and during the Sinulog Festival 2016!
1. Attend the Novena Mass at the Basilica
The first day of the novena will be on January 7, 2016 with the opening salvo, "Walk With Jesus" a penitential foot procession and then mass will be held throughout the day starting from 4 o'clock in the morning until 7pm. Personally, I like going to the 7pm mass because there will be singing, dancing, and praising the Child Jesus. The novena will end with a penitential foot procession, "Walk With Mama Mary". Devotees believe that if you complete the novena (9 days), Santo Nino will grant your prayers.
The fluvial parade will give you a different perspective of how the Sinulog festival is being celebrated. The fluvial parade is also called "sugat" or meet halfway. The statue of Mama Mary will be placed on a boat, same as the image of Sto. Nino (on a different boat, of course). Then somewhere between the old and the new bridge, both will meet halfway after that they will head their way back to the Basilica. This will be held the day before the mardi gras.
3. Watch the Sinulog Grand Parade
You can either do it by watching TV at home or watch it at the Abellana Grandstand (which requires you to be extra early and by early, I mean really really early) or watch it along the road. I'm not an early person and I take a lot of pictures, plus watching them dance along the road is way more fun than just sitting and waiting for the next contender. You'll be surprised who you'll meet along the way. You might see some local actors and actresses on their floats too.
There will be food almost everywhere! During the festival, you might want to try out some street food (but be careful with what you eat). Tuslob Buwa, Pungko- Pungko, Barbecue and the like! Head on the Fuente Osmena Circle and you'll have a lot of choices.
5. Party!
In the photo, Bam and I didn't actually went to a particular place to party. We just walked, followed a line and then suddenly people were already throwing paint at us! Well you can't be angry. It's Sinulog!
6. Watch the Sinulog Fireworks Competition
Malls have been actively participating in the Sinulog Festival. They hold fireworks competitions and even have one after the festival itself. At 9PM when everyone else is hungry, tired and about to go home, the malls then attract people by having fireworks. For me, it is my day ender.
In the end, it's really up to ourselves how we want to celebrate the feast of the Child Jesus. The important thing is we remember its solemnity, and remember in our hearts why we are celebrating such colourful festival. If you want to party, then go and party. Just take care of yourself and limit your drinking.
